URBAN CONTEMPORARY | PRIVATE RESIDENCE | CAPE TOWN
A Sculpted Sanctuary Between Mountain and Sea
Cradled on the slopes of Lion’s Head with panoramic views across the city bowl and Atlantic Ocean, this established garden already had strong structural “bones” in place. But the brief called for something more intimate, a green sanctuary that brought softness, shade, and the quiet rhythm of nature into a well-loved home.
The client envisioned extending their lifestyle deeper into the garden by removing the old artificial lawn and replacing it with a real, living lawn, while also introducing new entertainment pockets to pause and enjoy the ever-changing views. They wanted trees to frame and almost enclose the home, blurring the lines between urban living and nature.
Design Challenges
- The site, although beautifully positioned, was steep and segmented, requiring a design that connected different levels without interrupting the sense of flow.
- The previous synthetic lawn created an unwelcoming break in the garden’s continuity.
- The design had to balance structure and softness, using plants to complement both the client’s art collection and the commanding mountain backdrop.
Our Approach
This garden was treated as a journey, with no single focal point, rather a sequence of experiences that gradually reveal themselves. We worked with the site’s existing framework and enhanced it, introducing granite boulders and textured planting as you moved from one space through to the other.
The landscape unfolds in three layers:
- A shady, meandering lower garden grounded with lush underplanting and quiet green tones
- A middle terrace for entertaining, where tree canopies cool the air and frame views
- A final ascent to the sunny pool level, offering open skies and a sense of arrival
Design Highlights
- Planting Style: Trees and understory plants were strategically planted to form a green “ceiling” over and around the home, creating a sense of enclosure without blocking views.
- Art & Atmosphere: Planting pockets were designed not just for beauty but to respond to and highlight artworks in the garden. Colours, textures, and form were all selected to either complement or contrast with sculptural elements, bringing them into conversation with the landscape.
- Boulders & Pathways: Granite boulders were positioned to replicate the natural mountain geology, with irregular stone steps leading visitors up through the site. There is a sense of discovery and unfolding, as each new level invites exploration.
Sustainability in Practice
- Synthetic lawn was removed and replaced with real turf to restore natural ecology, improve soil health, and create a more breathable surface
- Tree planting for microclimate management: Canopies now cool key entertainment areas naturally, reducing heat stress and enhancing year-round usability
- Minimal disruption to existing site: Rather than overhaul the whole garden, the design worked with what was there, refining and enriching the experience without losing the spirit of the original landscape
Installation Timeline
Installation was completed in phases, allowing for thoughtful placement of new features and giving time for the garden to settle and grow into its layered structure.
