COASTAL STONE RETREAT | PRIVATE RESIDENCE | LLANDUDNO
A Coastal Garden Carved from Stone
Set between the wild Atlantic Ocean and the rocky mountain of Klein Leeukoppie, this family home called for a landscape that could both celebrate and withstand the extremes of the coast. The site faces full exposure to salt-laden summer southeasters, winter gales, and prolonged periods of heat and drought, conditions that often dictate a trade-off between beauty and resilience.
Our clients, a family with a deep love for the ocean and an easy, beach-inspired lifestyle, sought a relaxed yet vibrant garden that was colourful, hardy, low-maintenance, and grounded in local character. Most importantly, it needed to reflect the surrounding geology while offering shelter, privacy, and a connection to the natural coastal setting.
Design Challenges
- A steep, sloping site requiring structural transformation;
- Harsh exposure to summer and winter coastal winds;
- Salt spray, heat, and limited soil depth;
- Need for effective visual screening and layered planting in tight pockets.
Our Approach
Our response was to sculpt the site using its most defining feature: Granite.
Salvaged granite boulders, some unearthed from local construction and excavations, were hand-placed to form a series of terraced platforms. These walls became not only the structural foundation of the garden but also its expressive heart, echoing the granite spine of the mountain above.
Design Highlights
- Coastal Resilience with Colour: Indigenous, water-wise plants such as coastal aloes, vygies, crassulas, and Helichrysum were carefully layered with vibrant succulents, creating year-round colour and habitat.
- Shelter Through Structure: Mature trees were placed with the intention to buffer road noise and winds, while also grounding the home within the surrounding landscape. These were selected not just for screening value, but for their ability to survive in a salt-prone, wind-battered zone.
- Microclimate Creation: The terraced platforms created opportunities to garden in niches, each with its own light, wind, and moisture conditions, allowing a diverse plant palette to flourish.
Sustainability in Practice
This garden exemplifies ecological intelligence and long-term thinking. Every plant was chosen to thrive without dependency on constant irrigation or inputs. The use of reclaimed boulders reduced environmental impact and visually tied the garden to its context.
The design is water-wise, enduring, and celebrates the natural textures and tones of the region.
Installation Timeline
The project unfolded in tandem with the home’s construction, capitalising on the summer growing season to establish a strong root system before the family’s arrival in 2022.
This phased approach enabled optimal plant establishment, and by the time the clients moved in, the garden had already begun expressing its intended fullness and maturity.
