THE ROOTED HOUSE  |  PRIVATE RESIDENCE  |  CONSTANTIA

A Lush Courtyard Sanctuary

Set within the leafy lanes of Constantia, this house presents a distinctive square building layout centered around an intimate internal courtyard. With every room opening onto this serene space, the design aims to celebrate and enhance the verdant character of the area.

Design Challenges

Recognising the challenge posed by poor clay soils, these were carefully removed and replaced with nutrient-rich topsoil to ensure thriving plant growth throughout the garden.

Our Approach
K
L

  • It was important for the courtyard to become the central theme of the home. To emphasise this, we planted a striking Camel Foot Tree (Bauhinia purpurea), whose blooms and foliage bring seasonal colour throughout the year.
  • We aimed to embrace and complement the architecture throughout. Wherever planting was possible, we did so - such as alongside the architectural steps leading to the front door. These are softened with cascading groundcovers and lush shrubs, creating a welcoming, immersive garden experience that unfolds naturally as you approach.
  • To further embed the garden and home within the leafy lanes of Constantia, we added more trees to help blur property lines, house walls, and boundary edges, creating a seamless integration between architecture and nature.

Sustainability in Practice
K
L

  • Plants were selected for longevity. The garden is now well over three years old, with minimal replacements.
  • Soils were enhanced to meet the needs of the plants and ensure long-term vitality.
  • Borehole water was used sparingly, only during the hot summer months, and gradually reduced over time to encourage deeper root growth.
  • Quarterly maintenance reports were developed for the client, offering a framework for ongoing care and ensuring long-term resilience.

Installation Timeline

The installation unfolded over 12 months in two carefully timed phases, due to limited access around the courtyard. The focal tree was carefully protected during the build phase.

We worked closely with Metropolis Architects to develop the garden step-by-step as spaces became available.
